Narrative of Badr in the Qur’an
Now, follow the Qur’an’s description of the events.
Qur’an:
Idh Yoohi Rabbuka Ilal Malaa-ikati Annee Ma’akum, Fa-Thabbitulladheena Aamanoo (8:12).
Paraphrase:
“When your lord gave the revelation to the angels saying I am with you, so keep those who believe strong and firm.”
Qur’an:
Falam Taqtuloohum, wa Laakinnallaha Qatalahum, Wa Maa Ramaita Idh Ramaita wa Laakinnallaha Ramaa (8:17).
Paraphrase:
“You did not kill them, but it was God who killed them. And you did not shoot those arrows, when you were shooting them, but it was God who actually shot those arrows.”
God Killed Those Who Waged War against Him
God killed those who had decided to wage war against him.
These were human beings whom he had made with his own two hands and who then rejected him and his message of truth and turned against him and his messenger Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, in the most cruel, wicked, evil and inhuman fashion.
He made them; he gave them every chance to be good; and when they deliberately and willfully turned down every opening and opportunity he game them to come to him and did so most wickedly and violently, he killed them.
This was the war, the Qur’an says, in which the angels rode pillion on their special mounts into battle.
Idh Tastagheethoona Rabbakum, Fastajaaba Lakum Annee Mumiddukum Bi-Alfin Minal Malaa-ikati Murdifeen (8:9).
A Badr for Every Age and in Every Life
This was Badr.
This was a war whose outcome was preordained before the world was even created. In this war, Truth won and Falsehood lost. And there could have been no other outcome, no matter what.
God won and those who had set themselves as God’s enemies lost.
There was only one Badr in history. But at a different level there is a Badr in every age and in every place.
And there is also a Badr in the life of every society and community – and in the life of every human being.
And every time there is a Badr at any time or in any place, God shall always be on the side of Truth and Justice and Right and Good – what God calls in the Qur’an Al-Haqq.
And victory shall always be to God and his message of Truth and Justice – no matter who may like or dislike it.
Liyuhiqqal Haqqa wa Yubtilal Baatila Wa Lawu Karihal Mujrimoon (8:8).
Humanity Has Come Full Circle
Humanity has come full circle since the Battle of Badr 1400 years ago. Humanity today faces the same choice as it did then.
The question today seems to be the same old question of: “What shall it be?”
Shall it be “Truth, Evidence, Rationality and Freedom of Conscience and Choice,” for which Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, and his Muslim, Believer followers fought in the Battle of Badr?
Or shall it be “Lies, Malicious Propaganda, Brute Force and Coercion” for which the Non-Believers of Quraish fought?
That is the lesson the Battle of Badr holds for the world – in every age and in every place.
That is why God himself orchestrated that war and that is why he and his angels personally participated in that war: the Great War at Badr!
