Life comes in comparative degrees. Nothing says it better than that most awe-inspiring divine expression of Allahu Akbar.

Those two miraculous words of Allahu Akbar constitute the very air that Muslims in every age breathe. 

It is the music of the stars that reverberates in every sky in every place on earth. And it has for the past 1400-plus years. 

And eternally before that!

It is that celestial – and human and earthly and of all Nature’s – music of Allahu Akbar that keeps the earth rotating on its axis. And keeps heavens pouring life-giving water on earth. And makes earth burst out with all the abundance needed for sustaining life on earth.

And, frankly, if that cry of Allahu Akbar stopped on earth, the earth will stop breathing. The earth will end! The earth will parch and die.

So, comparative degree it is!

And that means, there is, and there will always be, room for America to be greater, better and “more perfect” than it is now. 

Or that it has ever been. 

Ours is an endless quest for “a more perfect union,” as the Constitution of the United States of America phrases it.

Read the Constitution:

“We the People of the United States, 
in Order to form a more perfect Union, 
establish Justice, 
insure domestic Tranquility, 
provide for the common defence, 
promote the general Welfare, 
and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, 
do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Now, let Muslims decide: 

Which part of the list above is not Islam? 

And where does every single Muslim young man and every single young woman in America stand in relation to that goal, and to that obligation, and in relation to that national and patriotic – just call it Islamic – challenge and duty?

That is why my entire life, every single decade, has been dedicated to the relentless and single-minded pursuit of that goal and discharge of that responsibility. 

And that is also why all my life has been taken up in inviting Muslims of America to embrace this goal, and this purpose, and to single-mindedly dedicate themselves to achieving and serving it.

Anyone with eyes can see that the items listed above are nothing less than a segment of the overall fabric of Khayir Ummah that God Almighty has designed for the Believers (read: Muslims if you want) in the Qur’an.

For, the items listed above in the Constitution are simply different kinds of operationalizations, and examples and illustrations, of the same basic divine twin-methodologies of Amr Bil Ma’roof and Nahy Anil Munkar, which are so emphatically and so clearly and so repeatedly laid out in the Qur’an.

That is because without this twin-engine of Amr Bil Ma’roof and Nahy Anil Munkar pulling and tugging at it in some form or fashion, human life is impossible on earth, regardless of whether the community in question is Muslim or non-Muslim!

And whether it is old and primitive or most modern and sophisticated.

So, let Muslims of America, even now, decide if they are, or they are not, going to be a part of that effort – now and in future. For, it is part of the magic and sweet mystery of Islam that, in life, there is no such thing as “too late” – no matter how late the hour. 

And in Allah’s scheme of things, there is also no such thing as “impossible” – no matter how overwhelming the odds.

And it is this that drives our commitment and our effort to “Take the Qur’an to Every Home and Heart that Needs It – and Which One Does Not?”

For, everything I have said above is directly, or indirectly, derived from the Qur’an! If I had the time, and the resources, and maybe even the energy, even though we are all such free-loaders on all those gifts and blessings showered upon us by Allah the Most Giving and the Most Generous and the Most Bountiful. 

If I had all those things, with Allah’s Barakat pouring in from every direction, as it does even now and always, I would show you item by item, word by word, step by step, where and how these things are spelled out in the Qur’an, and how the entire life of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, was dedicated for the attainment of those purposes!

For the blessed life of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, was not just about eating dates, wearing long clothes and deciding if the tail of the turban should be in the back or front, it was relentlessly and tirelessly and without respite about a lot of other things some of which the American Constitution talks about.

(a) It was about establishing Justice – and uncompromisingly so.

Wa Laa Tukhsirul Meezaan! (55:9)

Innallaha Ya’muru Bil Adl! (16:90)

(b) Not only that. Justice was pitched and posited at a level that most of us cannot even imagine even today. The bar of Justice was set so high that humanity will forever be in pursuit of it. The world can only aspire and strive toward that “more perfect” state of being and living – and, maybe, not quite reach it.


Fa’diloo wa Lawu Kaana Dhaa Qurbaa! (6:152)

“Uphold the scales of Justice even against your own relatives?”

Hello, people, what planet are we talking about, not just what country or what society?

Do you think the world – including America – can inch up a bit closer to that heaven of “more perfect” Justice formulated and presented by the Qur’an?

How will the world, and how will America, be able to do that when Muslims run and hide in their Lizard’s Holes that Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, prophesied about so clearly and so long ago, instead of holding a mirror to the world, and to America, and instead of helping the world and helping America to get there?

So, who will help America to rise to that status of “more perfect” Justice that the Qur’an requires? And that Allah sent the Qur’an into this world to acquire?

And that Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, strove and struggled so bravely and so mightily all his life to establish on earth? Beyond all the dates, and beyond all the camel rides, and beyond all the long and loose clothes, and beyond all the Nafil Namaz and Salaah?

Who, people, who? Which Muslim among you will do it? And who among you is man enough – and woman enough – and Muslim enough to do it?

(c) And then the bar of Justice is pushed even higher, until it disappears in the clouds.


Koonoo Qawwaameena Bil Qisti
Shuhadaa-a Lillahi
Wa Lawu Alaa Anfusikum! (4:135)

Want a paraphrase? Here it is:

“Be the pillars of Justice,
And be God’s own voice on earth,
By speaking out even against your own selves,
And, if it is necessary and Just,
then even against your own best interests –
your personal, professional, commercial, national and other interests!

People! And poor, poor, Muslims – besotted, bemused and on the run and helter-skelter! Don’t you see the quest for a “More Perfect Union” that the Constitution hankers after is an endless one?

And at the end of the day, it is a Muslim responsibility?

And don’t you see that – every step of the way – it is poor, poor America, that everybody plunders and abuses and only very few really help, is really trying desperately, and almost hopelessly, to catch up with the “More Perfect” state of the Qur’an?

And don’t you see Muslims that maybe, just maybe, you were brought to America from all parts of your Natural Habitat of Islam and Muslims, starting out, let us say, 1960’s, to do precisely that: To help America find that heaven on earth of “More Perfect Union” that the Qur’an came into this world to give everyone everywhere?

(d) And, the life of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, was, Muslims, unbeknownst to you, about ensuring Peace and Tranquility – both domestic and foreign.

And read, which you should have done anyway, all of the Qur’an, and multiple times, and continue doing so nonstop, cover to cover!

e) And, the life of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, was, Muslims, a ceaseless striving for providing General Welfare. Not only for his “own kind”; not only for Muslims; but for all of humanity.

And not only for “Mankind,” as so many of you would say in such a sad repetition of the tragic perversity handed to you by your Jewish and Christian mentors and masters, but “Humanity,” as God in the Qur’an calls it, and which you then changed to “Mankind” in your English translations.

And you say you did not change the Qur’an?

Not just for humans, but for all of God’s Family and Children, as it were, and if that Hadith is to be taken seriously from a narrow methodological or Sanad point of view.

Or just call it Khalq of Allah.

And that blanket expression, Khalq, covers every whale and tuna in water; and every bison and buffalo in the prairies; and every tiger and rhino in every jungle in Asia and Africa! And you know – or do you? – why I am mentioning these things by name?

Just as it covers every inch of the Rain Forest in every part of the world from Amazon and Trinidad to Indonesia and Thailand!

And every inch of the Air, Water, Soil and the Environment everywhere!

Can’t you see, Muslims, how America is trying so hard and so bravely and persistently, and against all the odds that are strewn in its path, to rise toward a “More Perfect Union,” and, in doing so, to catch up with the Qur’an?

And what do you think the American Civil War was all about? If not a bloody stand so as not to be pushed off from the goal and path of pursuing that “More Perfect Union”?

I am dedicated to that goal. Make no mistake about. And I have always been. Even my classes, totally insignificant and non-descript as they are, are still a nod in that direction of trying to help America reach its goal of a “More Perfect Union.”

Yes, let me own up, I do teach university. For, as they say a man has got to find a living. So, that is how I make my living I suppose.

But let me recast it in the language of Islam:

I teach, for, that is how God Almighty seems to have chosen to put bread on my table.
And feed the hungry mouths under the roof that he provided me.

His words:

Huwa Yut-imunee wa Yasqeenee!

But when I am in front of my university students, God Bless Them, I am constrained by my contractual commitment, and by my sense of honor, integrity, conscience and professionalism – roll it all into one and just call it Islam – which keep me from using words like Allah and Qur’an and Rasulullah, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, in my lectures, presentations and discussions.

But the wisdom and light of the Qur’an and Hadith pour out in every word and every gesture, as I try and open the eyes of my students to the fact, no matter what the subject matter, and no matter what the class, that there is a “More Perfect Union” to be had. And that such a “More Perfect Union” is both possible and desirable.

And, more importantly, it is the basic duty of every single one of us to strive for the attainment of such a “More Perfect Union.”

Our Constitution mandates it.

And our own situation requires it.

And some of my own personal markers – Aayaat, do you think? – on this road to a “More Perfect Union” for America are my passions and commitments like:

(a) Best possible Healthcare for every single American.

(b) Best Education, from the lowest to the highest levels, for every single American.

No, I am not unaware of America’s dark past of Slavery.

Or America’s equally dark or worse encounter with the so-called “Native Americans.”

Or about the treatment of Blacks in post-Civil War America.

Or about America’s too often dubious role in international affairs, and especially in relation to the Muslim world.

I know, maybe, more about these things than most people. And, maybe, even care about them more than most people. And they are all very, very personal to me. As if it was and is my history and my own life.

And it was and it is.

For, I am a Muslim. And as a Muslim that is my faith, as you would call it. And that is also my history.

To this day, the Qur’an thunders those words for all to hear. And they never stop ringing in my ears!

Khalaqakum Min Nafsin Waahidatin (7:189)

Humanity, one family? All of us children of one parentage? What a beautiful concept!

And how America struggled with that simple equation for the longest time!

No, I am neither unaware, nor oblivious, nor indifferent to these and to many other similar things. But my problem is deeper.

My problem is that both the slaves and slave owners are my people. They are all my brothers and sisters.

Just like every single “Native American” and, also, every single White settler and Colonist is!

And my challenge is – and it is a challenge that is imposed upon me by my Islam and by my basic humanity – to make every single male and female American see this fundamental human equation of the Qur’an – and to embrace it: That we are all members of the same common human family and our common “religion,” given to us by God through all his prophets, God Bless Them All, is Justice and Liberty for All!

For, that is our way, that is America’s way, and that is the way of the entire world, and that is God’s own chosen way, to a “More Perfect Union,” not only for America but for the entire world.

And that is what I have – from Day One – dedicated and consecrated my life to achieve. No matter in how small and insignificant a measure, being the kind of Be-Nothing and Know-Nothing that I am.

Fa-Lillahil Hamdu Rabbis-Ssaamaawaati wa Rabbil Ardi Rabbil Aalameen!
