Time was – and that was a long, long time ago too – when I thought the United States of America – and UK and Europe thrown into the equation – was the safest, the most secure and the most promising place for a Muslim to be in.
And in many ways it was.
And, believe it or not, in many significant ways, it still is. No matter how dark the clouds, and no matter how deafening the thunder of hate and prejudice and discrimination and injustice and propaganda and abuse rolling from every side.
And my hope, my expectation and my prayer is that it will continue to be so.
But then Shaitan never sleeps.
Allah clearly warned us in the Qur’an:
Innash Shayitaana Lil-Insaani Aduwwun Mubeen.
And Muslims ran amuck.
And Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, had warned us that Shaitan runs in our veins like blood. He said:
Majrad Dam.
So Muslims ran amuck: In America and around the world.
Muslim tyrants and kings and petty potentates ran amuck.
Mercenary Mullas calling themselves sheiks, imams, Islamic Clerics and what not ran amuck.
And Muslim little boys, and also some Muslim little girls, ran amuck.
How clearly I remember one such Muslim little girl, with a lot of education and big degrees, one of whose driving concerns in life was for Muslim women to be able to give Jum'ah Khutbah!
As if Muslims had no other pressing life-and-death issues: intellectual or social or political or economic!
And America ended up where it is right now. And the world of Allah ended up the way it is right now.
See if this Aayat Karimah makes any sense to anyone:
Hattaa Idhaa Akhadhatil Ardu Zukhrufahaa,
Wazzayyanat,
Wa Zanna Ahluhaa Annahum Qaadiroona Alaiha,
Ataahum Amrunaa Layilan Awu Nahaaraa,
Fa-Ja'alnaaha Haseedan,
Ka-An Lam Taghna Bil Ams ...
Paraphrase:
“And when things began to look really lovely and wonderful;
And the people thought they had full control over the situation;
Our command descended upon them all of a sudden;
And everything turned to dust;
As if none of it ever existed before!”
Of course, every Aayat of the Qur'an Karim is a most noble Aayah – Aayah Karimah that is. Here is how the Qur’an characterizes itself:
Wa Innahu La-Qur'anun Karim!
Paraphrase:
“Surely, it is a Most Noble Qur’an!”
Don't run to every little pretender of Clericism in the name of Islam – in Islam, there are no clerics, period – and try to find a more comforting interpretation of some sort to the clear divine warning contained in the above Aayah Karimah.
Generally speaking, Aayaat (plural) of the Qur'an are for all, even though the background and context may be different from Aayah to Aayat.
Next, this business of divine punishment, overtaking the wrongdoers, is not directed exclusively at the Non-Believers. It is God Almighty's general law by which he runs his world.
That law – the Eternal and Universal Divine Law – is summarized in one word: Al-Qist – Justice.
And in another word: Al-'Adl – Justice.
And another word: As-Sidq – Truth.
And another word: Al-Haqq – Truth.
All this is in the Qur’an – crystal clear on its own, with no human commentary needed or attached.
And that Eternal and Universal Divine Law often manifests itself on earth in two ways:
a) Reward.
b) Punishment.
Reward for those who do the right thing.
Punishment for those who do the wrong things.
Nature – or God of Nature as Thomas Jefferson had sense enough to realize – or stated more correctly, God Almighty, does not run his world by different sets of rules for different people.
In God’s Kingdom – that is where we live our earthly lives right now, wherever and however we live – there is no Favored Nation or Chosen People status for any group of people: Muslim or non-Muslim.
It is one law for all.
God's world is not a South Africa-style Apartheid world.
It is not the so-called American Jim Crow world with separate drinking fountains for Blacks and Whites.
Unlike India, there are no Untouchables in God's law who are not allowed to even sit under the shadow of an upper-caste Hindu’s wall, leave alone draw or drink water from the same well.
For, God Almighty is the most fair and just God, and God does not in any form or shape discriminate against anyone who has his domicile in his Earthly Kingdom: Hindu or Muslim; Jew or Christian or Atheist or someone else.
Therefore, when it comes to God’s law, it is one size fits all.
And that is because God is not an unjust or unfair God.
Wa Maa Rabbuka Bi-Zallaamin Lil-'Abeed!
And don’t let the self-serving pronouncements of Mercenary Mullas blind you to the most clear and clarion words of Allah.
For, Allah’s words are clear and stark:
Wattaqoo Fitnatan La Tuseebannal-Ladheena Zalamoo Minkum Khaasssah!
Paraphrase:
“When divine retribution strikes, in many cases, the good and the bad will all be swept up in its terrible grip.”
And that is what happened – and is happening – to Muslims of America.
And that is what happened – and is happening – to Muslims around the world.
