When God wants something to happen, he just says “Be!” and it happens.

That is the ultimate Rule by Decree.

It is Rule by Royal Fiat.

That is because God is King.

And that is because God is the Owner and the Master and the Maker of all things and beings.

But People must rule not through fiat or dictate or edict, but through consent.

They must rule by the Consent of the People.

People must run their affairs, from family and friendship networks, to government and society and business, using nothing but mutual consultation, debate, deliberation and discussion.

That is Islam.

In Islam, the only acceptable form of government is Government of the People by the People.

“People, Muslims included, have opinions about America – and who can blame them. And they want to express those opinions – and they should. For, that is what America is all about: the right of the people everywhere to have an opinion and express it.

And from way before that, from when America was not even a glint in the eye of the Founders, and when the thought of crossing the Atlantic had occurred neither to Thomas Paine nor perhaps to any of his forbears going back several generations, that is what Islam has been all about: the inalienable and God-given right of people to have opinions and express them. Whether or not those opinions are positive or negative, derogatory or salutary has no bearing on the right of the people – whether inside or outside America – to have an opinion about America, or about anything else, and be able to express that opinion.

So, should I say: Thank God for America?

And should we all not also in the same breath say: Thank God for Islam?” (Dr. Pasha)

“It was during the first few days of the month of Muharram that Moses (Alaihis Salam) set his followers free from the tyranny of the Pharaohs. He parted the sea with his staff and led his people to freedom in the Sinai desert. Also it was during the first few days of the month of Muharram, in the desert of Karbala in Iraq, that Husain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, was martyred by people with Muslim names when he sought to free the Muslims – and the world – from the tyranny of dynastic rule and hereditary monarchy.” (Dr. Pasha)

“Tyranny has many faces and they are all from the Devil.

In case anyone has trouble understanding this simple equation, let me make it as clear as I possibly can: A so-called “Religious” Dictatorship or “Islamic” Dictatorship is still a dictatorship.

It is one of the many faces of tyranny.

Nothing more, nothing less.

In fact, such a so-called religious or theocratic dictatorship is all dictatorship and tyranny and no Islam.” (Dr. Pasha)

“To the extent Democracy implies rights, freedoms and opportunities for participation and representation for “The People,” it is from God and it embodies the essence and spirit of Islam.

Dictatorship on the other hand, any kind or type of dictatorship, whether it is a civilian or military dictatorship or a hereditary monarchy pure and simple, that limits the rights and freedoms of “The People,” and denies them opportunities for full participation and representation, is from the Devil and it represents all that is alien and hostile to Islam.” (Dr. Pasha)

It is that time again: Elections! And if you are Muslim, you must vote.

There are no ifs or buts about it. As Muslim, you have no choice but to vote. For, Islam means voting. And it means elections.

Others may get away by not voting, but as Muslim you cannot. God Almighty, the maker and master of this world, will hold you accountable.

So, if you do not vote, you will be answerable to him. So also, you will answer to God if you cast the wrong vote.

Waa Islaamaah!

That is what I say: Waa Islaamaah!

It is a distress cry – about the condition of Islam today. Poor, poor Islam! That is what it means: Waa Islaamaah!

And I will tell you why I am crying Waa Islaamaah!

It is a cry of deep distress and anguish, of the soul and mind, at the sad condition in which the most glorious system sent down by God to save humanity finds itself at the hands of its followers, and others, today – so many of whom deign, and dare, to speak in its behalf, no matter how little they may know or understand it.

Or how little they may understand the world in which Islam operates. And no matter how inadequately prepared and equipped they may be to do so.

Not so long ago, I was shown a Fatwa declaring elections to be Haram. It was in UK, I think. I call it a rejectionist, isolationist Fatwa.

But at bottom it may also be an un-Islamic one. For, elections and the fundamental right of choice they represent, is the way of life in Islam – the system God Almighty designed to run his world and which he then sent down at the hands of his messengers and prophets to guide, direct and organize human life on earth.

By seeking to keep Muslims from voting and from elections, this Fatwa rejects participation of Muslims in the political process in the West. And it seeks to isolate them from life around them – reducing Muslims and their communities to small, ineffective, marginalized, disfranchised ghettoes.

Anyone can see that it is a rejectionist, isolationist Fatwa. If some of you are shocked by this Fatwa, so was I. The logic behind the Fatwa was, I take it, if there was any logic to it at all, that elections were a Kafir concoction, opposed to the pure divine way of doing things in Islam – whatever that meant.

I am trying to reconstruct the argument here as best as I can. And then see if it holds any water. […]
