This Business of Doing Islam!
(Bringing Islam to the World One Concept at a Time!
Taking the Qur'an to Every Home and Heart that Needs It --
And which One Does Not?)
It is the simplest and easiest thing: this business of doing Islam.
First, the understanding. Allah made us. He owns us. Simple logic.
And he made Islam as a way for us to run our life with. And he made this system of Islam also run the world which he created for us.
We are in some ways a kind of star attraction in Allah's creation, it would appear. Big thing to say, but the signs are unmistakable.
We have been given the choice to know Islam, or not to know it. And to accept Islam, or to reject it.
Each decision will have its consequences, but the choice is there. And that choice – and that option if you will – is given to all by God Almighty himself.
And if you go ahead and put down your name as an Islam-Accepter – a Muslim that is – as opposed to an Islam-Rejector or a Kaafir, you must understand that Islam means knowing all that you need to know about Islam. For, without it you will not know what to do.
And Muslims have all kinds of problems when it comes to knowing their Islam.
And in addition, you must also know all you can about the world in which you live. And this means your immediate surroundings as well as the larger world with all its complexities and challenges.
For, without it you will not know where to do Islam or how to do it.
This is also something which Muslims are sketchy about. Their knowledge of the world is quite shaky and flawed. And it is one of the biggest problems hounding the Muslims in today’s world – their lack of proper knowledge and understanding of the world.
If you do all this, it will become clear to you that part of doing Islam is to take Islam to others – your friends, relatives, neighbors, fellow-citizens and your fellow human beings.
And not to rest till you have succeeded in delivering the message of Islam to every door in the world.
For, Islam is not only going to the mosque, and praying, and fasting, and reading Qur'an. Islam is also working day and night to take the Qur'an to every home and heart that needs it – and which one does not – throughout the world.
And this may take time. Little bit of time or a lot of time.
And at the end of it all, what you consider to be success may be a mixed bag from your own worldly point of view.
For Prophet Musa, Alaihis Salaam, when his people – the Jews – misbehaved, God Almighty imposed a fairly severe punishment on them. And that punishment came in the form of exile into a wilderness. And the period of wandering in the wilderness was 40 years, no less!
Prophet Yusuf, Alaihis Salam, had to spend a few years in jail, as the Qur’an puts it, before what you would call success came his way and he was placed at the head of Egyptian Administration as it were.
Prophet Nuh, Alaihis Salam, the Qur’an tells us, spent nine centuries inviting people to Allah’s message of Islam, and at the end of it all, his success was nothing much to speak of. In the language of the Qur’an, the final outcome was:
Wa Maa Aamana Ma’ahu Illaa Qaleel!
“No more than a handful of people accepted his message!”
It was only Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, who worked for 20 years and his efforts resulted in the world totally being transformed, from top to bottom, in this impossibly short span of time.
And the world has never looked back since.
For, everything good that happens in the world from the time of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, happens in accordance with his teachings and message.
When Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, started work toward the beginning of the 7th Century (610 or so of the Christian Calendar), the world was a very different place from what it is today.
Just to mention one example, reading and writing was practically unknown, except in the most privileged sections of society such as royalty and clergy – kings and priests.
And the very First Commandment Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, proclaimed to the world coming from God was: Read!
And today, reading is the way of the world in which we live. And reading – education in the broadest sense of that expression – is essential to success and power and wealth in the world today.
So, Islam means inviting everyone to Islam. And not just hiding in the mosque or in your own house or office and “praying” and fasting and reading Qur’an – and maybe hoping no one sees you.
It is this business of inviting everyone to Islam is what we call Working for Allah and Taking the Qur’an to Every Home and Heart that Needs It – and Which One Does Not?
Not to do so is to turn our back on Islam. It is a betrayal of Kalimah Tayyibah: Laa Ilaaha Illallah!
Of our Shahaadah!
A great deal of the trouble Muslims of the world are in today comes from the fact that they have turned their back on this important duty of inviting everyone to Allah. And thus they have betrayed the Kalimah and the Shahaadah and as a result Allah is punishing them for their folly.
To what degree and in what time frame our efforts will meet with what kind of success, that is, like everything else, decided by Allah.
And in the process of inviting Allah’s People back to Allah, who will be asked to pay what kind of price, that too will be decided by Allah. For, Allah is the decider of all things.
Allah’s decisions, whether we see them as positive or negative from our own worldly point of view, are eternal and final.
Nothing and no one changes them. And nothing and no one protects anyone from them.
